Golden Globe 2020 Nominations

Tyler Harlow

So last week I attempted to predict what was going to be nominated for this year’s Golden Globes. I didn't nominate my preferences, which would have been wildly different but there was some crossover in a few categories. While there were some misses, I was pretty close to what was actually nominated. I will provide my score and commentary on the nominees where I feel the need.

BEST MOTION PICTURE – DRAMA 1917 The Irishman Joker Marriage Story The Two Popes (I guessed Little Women)

4/5 to start out! I am honestly shocked that Little Women isn't nominated here over The Two Popes. Despite not having seen the film yet (or The Two Popes for that matter), the early buzz is incredible and I thought Greta Gerwig had more than earned a spot. This is also the start of a disappointing lack of diversity for the nominated films.

BEST ACTOR – DRAMA Christian Bale - Ford v. Ferrari Antonio Banderas- Pain and Glory Adam Driver- Marriage Story Joaquin Phoenix- Joker Jonathan Pryce- The Two Popes (I guessed Robert DeNiro - The Irishman)

4/5 here as well, but to be honest I thought I was going to be wrong about Christian Bale rather than Robert DeNiro. The Irishman looks to be a major contender so the lead actor being omitted from here seems off and probably won't happen in later awards.

BEST ACTRESS – DRAMA Cynthia Erivo- Harriet (I guessed Lupita Nyong'o - Us) Scarlett Johansson- Marriage Story Saoirse Ronan- Little Women Charlize Theron- Bombshell Renee Zellweger- Judy

Keeping the trend of 4/5 here. Lupita Nyong'o had shown to have a lot of support in some early awards that instead went to Cynthia Erivo. I didn't see Harriet, but I have a feeling we haven't heard the last of Lupita this awards season and she appears to be the stronger candidate.

BEST MOTION PICTURE – MUSICAL OR COMEDY Dolemite is My Name (I guessed Hustlers) Jojo Rabbit Knives Out Once Upon a Time in Hollywood Rocketman

Broken record alert! 4/5 again. I thought Hustlers was going to take the spot occupied by Dolemite is My Name but I enjoyed that film much more than I did Hustlers, so I am ok being wrong here.

BEST ACTOR – MUSICAL OR COMEDY Daniel Craig- Knives Out Roman Griffin Davis- Jojo Rabbit (I guessed Himesh Patel- Yesterday) Leonardo DiCaprio- Once Upon a Time in Hollywood Taron Egerton- Rocketman Eddie Murphy- Dolemite Is My Name

Bet you can't guess what my score was here! This was the category where I thought the out of nowhere nomination for a film like Yesterday was going to happen with a Himesh Patel nomination. Turns out I was wrong but again I'm ok with it. Good for Roman Griffin Davis!

BEST ACTRESS – MUSICAL OR COMEDY Awkwafina- The Farewell Ana de Armas- Knives Out Beanie Feldstein- Booksmart Emma Thompson- Late Night Cate Blanchett- Where’d You Go Bernadette (I guessed Constance Wu - Hustlers)

Here is actually where the out of nowhere nomination happened, but for Cate Blanchett! I thought this was going to be Constance Wu for Hustlers. I should have known the Globes would have wanted a little more star power for the night. They need to stop nominating bigger stars thinking it will bring more attention and credence to their awards ceremony. It doesn't and snubs much more deserving nominees.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE Tom Hanks- A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood Al Pacino- The Irishman Joe Pesci- The Irishman Brad Pitt- Once Upon A Time In Hollywood Anthony Hopkins- The Two Popes (I guessed Willem Dafoe- The Lighthouse)

Anthony Hopkins sneaks in! The support for The Two Popes is very evident and stronger than I was expecting.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A MOTON PICTURE Annette Benning- The Report (I guessed Florence Pugh- Little Women) Margot Robbie- Bombshell Jennifer Lopez- Hustlers Kathy Bates- Richard Jewell (I guessed Zhao Shuzhen- The Farewell) Laura Dern- Marriage Story

Oh no! my streak was broken here with 3/5. No Florence Pugh for Little Women or Zhao Shuzhen for The Farewell. I don't thing either will be ignored again for future awards, as both delivered buzzworthy performances.

BEST DIRECTOR Bong Joon Ho- Parasite Sam Mendes- 1917 Quentin Tarantino- Once Upon A Time In Hollywood Martin Scorsese- The Irishman Todd Phillips - Joker (I guessed Noah Baumbach- Marriage Story)

Todd Phillips?! Really??? This should have either gone to Noah Baumbach or Greta, Marielle Heller, Lulu Wang, or another more deserving nominee.

BEST SCREENPLAY Noah Baumbach- Marriage Story Bong Joon Ho and Jin Won Han- Parasite (I guessed Greta Gerwig- Little Women) Anthony McCarten- The Two Popes (I guessed Taika Waititi- JoJo Rabbit) Quentin Tarantino- Once Upon A Time In Hollywood Steven Zaillian- The Irishman

I will never exclude Anthony McCarten from a screenplay nomination again. This dude is the king of subpar biopics that the awards bodies go for. While I didn't predict it, yes to Parasite getting a nomination! Would have loved to see Lulu Wang here as well for The Farewell.

BEST ORIGINAL SCORE Daniel Pemberton- Motherless Brooklyn (I guessed Alan Silvestri- Avengers: Endgame) Alexandre Desplat- Little Women Hildur Guðnadóttir- Joker Thomas Newman- 1917 (I guessed Michael Abels- Us) Randy Newman- Marriage Story (I guessed Michael Giacchino- JoJo Rabbit)

This is where I really started to go wrong. An eclectic mix of films here.

BEST ORIGINAL SONG “Beautiful Ghosts” – CATS “I’m Gonna Love Me Again” – Rocketman “Into the Unknown” – Frozen 2 “Spirit” – The Lion King “Stand Up” – Harriet

Well, CATS had to be nominated for something!

BEST ANIMATED FEATURE Frozen 2 The Lion King (I guessed I Lost My Body) Missing Link (I guessed Weathering with You) Toy Story 4 How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World

Really? No I Lost My Body for The Lion King? This has to be the Hollywood Foreign Press trolling Disney.

BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM The Farewell (I guessed Atlantics) Les Misérables Pain and Glory Parasite Portrait of a Lady on Fire (I guessed Honeyland)

I wouldn't have thought to put The Farewell here but kudos for finding a sneaky spot to honor one of the best films of the year.

So there you have it! The winners will be announced on January 5th! Check back closer to the date for my picks on who will win!
